Advanced Forensic Interviewing
Huntsville, AL
August 3-6, 2010
Research to Practice
What do forensic interviewers need to know to elicit full and accurate reports from children? A large body of relevant scientific research on child witness limitations and capabilities now exists to help answer this question. Consequentially, there is growing consensus about the importance of a phased interview approach, which reflects a developmental perspective and makes use of effective questioning techniques to obtain the most reliable and complete information possible from a child. However, there remain many considerations to be balanced, as not all aspects of the forensic interview have been thoroughly researched and much practice is still determined at the local level. Also, we know that no single interview technique is suitable for all children or contexts. In particular, challenges exist in interviewing preschoolers, reluctant children, and children with mental impairments.
This advanced training will provide an opportunity for the practicing forensic interviewer to immerse him/herself in a collaborative learning experience. We will accomplish our goal by combining instruction from practicing experts in the field with ample opportunities for an exchange of ideas among the group, and a chance to peer review each other’s work.
Specific Topics Covered:
• Questioning Children – Research to Practice
• Interviewing Preschoolers and Children with Disabilities
• Interviewing Children who Witness Violence
• Defending our Work – Protocols, Mentorship, Peer Review
Additionally, Tom Lyon will conduct a full day of training regarding “Maximizing True Disclosures”, with such topics as:
• How to Build Narratives – Not Just Rapport
• Turning Closed-Ended Questions into Open-Ended Questions
• Neglected Aspects of the Child’s Experience
• Dealing with Reluctance and Recantation
