National Children’s Advocacy Center Awarded Two FY 16 Federal Grants
October 6, 2016, Huntsville, AL – The National Children’s Advocacy Center (NCAC) has received two federal grants totaling $2.15 million dollars, with $900,000 awarded to the NCAC’s Training Center and $1,250,000 awarded to the NCAC’s Southern Regional Children’s Advocacy Center (SRCAC). The project period for both awards is one year.
The U.S. Department of Justice, Office of Justice Programs, Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention (OJJDP) awarded the National Children’s Advocacy Center (NCAC) Training Center funding to support the continued development and implementation of a model training and technical assistance program for child abuse response professionals across the U.S., and to improve the judicial system’s handling of child abuse and neglect cases. The amount of federal support awarded is $900,000. This funding will allow NCAC to continue to develop training programs and provide technical assistance through in-person, asynchronous, and web-based opportunities. The funding will also support NCAC’s efforts to create and make accessible publications and resources designed to enhance the coordinated multidisciplinary response to child abuse through the Child Abuse Library Online (CALiOTM). As directed by OJJDP, NCAC will also use the funds to address the growing need to create training and technical assistance for CACs and other child abuse response professionals regarding services to child victims of sex trafficking.
The U.S. Department of Justice, Office of Justice Programs, Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention (OJJDP) also awarded the NCAC’s Southern Regional Child Advocacy Center (SRCAC) $1,250,000, under the 2016 Victims of Child Abuse Regional Children’s Advocacy Centers Program. A project of the NCAC, the SRCAC provides training and technical assistance to communities in the southeastern states and the District of Columbia, working to provide a coordinated, collaborative response to child abuse. In the region served by SRCAC, there are 263 accredited Children’s Advocacy Centers (CACs), 54 associate/developing CACs, 20 affiliated CACs, and 16 state chapters. In 2015, nearly 12,000 child abuse professionals benefitted from training provided by SRCAC.
The National Children’s Advocacy Center, in addition to providing comprehensive child abuse prevention and intervention services in Madison County, also accounts for more than 5,000 hotel nights booked in Madison County each year by professionals attending trainings, some supported by these two grant projects, and this infuses nearly $1,000,000 into the local economy each year.
