NCAC in Iceland

Chris Newlin and Scott Modell, Ph.D., recently conducted three days of training for professionals seeking to support and protect children. On Wednesday, June 1 and 2, Chris and Scott presented to approximately 180 professionals from the Icelandic Diagnostic Center, Multidisciplinary Team Member organizations, disability advocates, and the Barnahus (CAC).

Day one training – scott and olofThe first day of training was opened by the Icelandic Minister of Social Affairs, and addressed an overview of Developmental Disabilities; co-occurrence of developmental disabilities and child maltreatment; and, unique characteristics of children with intellectual, physical, and communication disabilities that increase the risk of abuse.

Chris Newlin speaking day two 1The second day of training addressed creating awareness among staff and detecting possible abuse of clients; risk factors for various types of abuse; safety/prevention strategies to reduce the risk for abuse; immediate response to clients and families where abuse is suspected; and an overview of existing system of intervention for child maltreatment in Iceland.

Day three – Scott and Chris trainingOn Friday, June 3, Chris and Scott provided an intensive training session for staff from the Barnahus and Multidisciplinary Team on forensic interview techniques for use in the investigative and legal environments to optimize communication with children with disabilities including significant pre-interview efforts to understand specific disability and its impact on the specific individual involved, modifications necessary to provide evidence-based mental health treatment, and case consultation on emerging issues and situations. There was an overwhelmingly positive response to this training, and numerous plans for the further evolution of improved practice were developed.  Article from the Iceland Monitor.
