NCAC Director Participates in White House Meeting on Violence Against Children

January 8, 2013 Huntsville, AL – In response to the recent horrific incidents of gun violence and other violence in our society, Vice-President Joe Biden’s Office was tasked by President Barack Obama to develop meaningful legislative and policy recommendations to address this issue. Chris Newlin, Executive Director of the National Children’s Advocacy Center (NCAC), was invited to participate in this process. Newlin said, “The NCAC is recognized as a national leader in providing services for traumatized children and those professionals who serve them. It is an honor to serve in this capacity.”

Newlin participated in the first meeting of this effort on January 3, 2013 in Washington DC led by Secretary of Education Arne Duncan. There were 16 national non-profit youth-serving organizations present, in addition to representatives from the President’s and Vice-President’s Domestic Policy Offices, the Department of Justice, and the Department of Health and Human Services. Each non-profit was invited to share ideas about what is needed to help reduce violence in our society with a particular focus on violence toward children. Secretary Duncan and the other government representatives were very engaged in the discussion with significant focus on accessibility and quality of mental health services for children and adults and on the social and emotional development of our youth.
