Meet May Superhero – Kim O’Leary!

The May Superhero may not scale tall buildings in a single bound, but her compassion and care for those hurting is boundless. Kim O’Leary works as a Child Life Specialist and Caring House Coordinator at Huntsville Hospital’s hospice Caring House. In short, she is there for the children in our community who experience great loss.

Kim’s empathy paired with the ability to help children see past the pain has assisted countless children after the death of a loved one. Some of these children have lost someone unexpectedly, some have witnessed violence in addition to loss, and some have watched a parent or family member lose a battle with a severe illness. This Superhero is there, no matter the reason behind the loss, to guide a child through the grief. Kim teaches coping skills and works with children in group settings. Helping them all realize they are not alone and will find happiness again.

Kim doesn’t stop there! She also helps with community outreach events including National Children’s Grief Awareness Day and Suicide Prevention and Awareness Programs. We know, at the NCAC, that when a child comes to us with trauma that includes grief and loss, Kim will be there to collaborate and help us provide the best care possible.

The person who nominated Kim said, “She works tirelessly in helping others and has been invested in aiding people moving through loss for many years during her career as a Certified Grief Specialist.”

Kim O’Leary is our May Superhero for being a light at a child’s darkest time.
